Grey barite (barytes) to API 13A, for drilling mud
Grey barite to API 13A, in three grades: Barytes 4.20, 4.15 and 4.10. We buy the barite in and process it at our plant at Rly. Kodur, Andhra Pradesh.
Identity
The three grades
The grades differ on density alone; the other three requirements are common to all of them. The grade name is the density limit — 4.20, 4.15 and 4.10 g/ml minimum, in that order. These are specification limits, not measurements of a lot. The figures for the lot you buy come on the analysis certificate that ships with it.
| Requirement | Unit | Limit | Barytes 4.20 | Barytes 4.15 | Barytes 4.10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Density | g/ml | Minimum | 4.20 | 4.15 | 4.10 |
| Water-soluble alkaline earth metals, as calcium | mg/kg | Maximum | 250 | 250 | 250 |
| Residue greater than 75 µm | % mass | Maximum | 3.0 | 3.0 | 3.0 |
| Particles smaller than 6 µm ESD | % mass | Maximum | 30 | 30 | 30 |
Limits as set by API 13A.

Packing and storage
| Pack | Weight | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Bags | 50 | kg |
| Jumbo bags | 1000 | kg |
| Jumbo bags | 1500 | kg |
Barite is stored dry, with dust exposure kept to a minimum during handling.
What it is used for
Barite is the weighting agent in drilling fluids. Its density holds back formation pressure, which is why API 13A sets a minimum density and caps the soluble and fine fractions. About 90% of world barite output goes into drilling.
Outside drilling, barite goes into barium chemicals and glass. It is used as a filler in rubber, leather, textile and paper, and as an extender for white pigment.
